From Sciocont's Planet Editor thread.

Gas planets have no real surface. As they are all just layers and layers of gas. So you couldn't really create static civilizations on gas planets. But remember from star wars? That one gas harvesting station? Well, you could possibly create flying cities that are there to sustain life on that planet or for mining/harvesting. Issue is you'd need to bring an ecosystem with you in order to live there (no life and all). Ideas, comments, all that good stuff. Feel free to say.

This should be possible, but later in development, since a space station in orbit would have a similar effect, if supplied with mining ships/robots. Stations in the atmosphere would just be able to harvest gases directly, and do so with a pretty awesome view from the windows, a view which would make great concept art. (Wink, wink, to anyone who can draw)

You could play on the moon of a gas giant and have the gas from the planet be a part of your economy in the early Space stage

Let's hope making mining stations on moons doesn't lead to what happened in Dead Space...

But anyways, trading stations and such could be created in orbit or on the moons selling the gasses.

@Uteen Oh, and I know someone who is an amazing artist. I wonder if she'd be willing to make something like that.
