| Here, I will copy/paste Sciocont's Planet Editor that I stashed on our Backup forum, before we even had the forum we just left behind.
Here i will show my concept for the planet editor. This editor will be able to create rocky planets, gas giants, and dwarf planets. It will also be able to create moons and rings. It will be able to terraform moons as well.
Static & Dynamic Static planets are always just like how you make them. They are never affected by plate movement or erosion.
Dynamic planets are far more complex and require much more skill and foresight to make. Whether you have a gas or rocky planet, you must specify where the plates are, how they move, what rock is where and what the water cycle would be like. Erosion also happens in dynamic planets, causing extensive rivers, canyons and caves. Dynamic planets are also affected by the movements of their moons, meaning their tides change over time, from roaring torrents to tiny shifts. They are the ultimate place to play.
Types of Planet First off, you choose either to create a gas or rocky planet.
Gas Giant With gas giants, you will be able to paint on layers of gases. You start out with a small, dense core, and then start adding on gases with a brush. Different gases will be different colors and have different environments. You can make layers all one or a few types of gases dispersed evenly by selecting the entire layer and then clicking on the type of gas you want to add. You can also add traveling storms or stationary storms, or pockets of different gases that won't diffuse into the others.
Rocky Planet Rocky planets require a few more complex tools, including surface, atmosphere and water features.
Atmosphere can be controlled just like gas planets, or with a dominant-gas selection tool (here on earth the dominant gas is nitrogen)
I'll explain what it takes to make a dynamic planet first. First, you decide the boundaries and movement of tectonic plates. To define a plate, click the icon "add plate". A loop with twenty stretch points will appear. You can take away or add points by right clicking. The points will define the shape of your plate. It will appear to be a orange-burning shape. Anywhere three or more plates meet there will automatically be a volcano. You can also add, take away or resize volcanic zones with another tool.
Then you can start editing terrain. Terrain can be edited like a topographic map. On the first layer is the deepest ocean where you have drawn in the tectonic plates. That is layer 0. You start on layer 1. From there you draw in the basic levels of terrain and it will automatically be produced (like a topographic map). The main layers are very large (maybe 1km or so). You can work in between layers as well, editing down to a very small level. Random bumps and lumps will be added later depending on what type of environment the terrain is in.
You could also use tycoon game-like tools, with different shapes to "paint on" that would raise, lower, roughen, smooth and such. The topgraphic map would be generated from this. The topographic map is what is changed due to tectonics and erosion.

Alright. Any additional details you have will be added to the OP.

| Wouldn't it be unrealistic for a static planet to exist? | |

Ignoring meteor impacts, yes. See the moon and Mercury for two examples.

Ignoring meteor impacts, yes. See the moon and Mercury for two examples. So, would a static planet be able to be effected be meteors? Also Scio, feel free to edit the OP whenever you want. It's your idea.

| I think no, because it is not effected by erosion and the likes. | |

| This al appears to be implementable.. But what about the movement of tectonic plates according to time? I.e. Tectonic movement is very slow, so would you have a slider in god mode to speed it up? or would it be naturally faster to account for gameplay timespace? | |

| Will there be life on gas planets, and if so will it be possible to develop civilzations on these gas planets. | |

This probably needs its own thread.

This probably needs its own thread. It does, but the answer is no for life. Civilization? Needs a new thread.

| There will be life on gas planets. As for plates, when we come to it, we do whatever's best. I don't care too much about them, personally, i just wanted the concept of tectonic shift in gameplay. | |

There will? How would it survive? I imagine them being like jellyfish, wandering around in the dense, gaseous atmosphere as earth-bound jellyfish would do in deep water. That is, if they are mobile at all, and not just giant sacs of air acting as plants floating around mindlessly. Which gives me an idea; they could filter-feed on tiny, possibly nutrient rich particles hidden in the clouds somewhere, as, once again our jellyfish do on tiny plankton. (Do they? I forget.) Or maybe the gas giant has extremely active weather, and life is fueled by small bolts of electricity. As for more advanced, sientent life, well, I don't really imagine it being all that plausible.

| I agree, noit. It' is however, another situation where technology would be hard to develop due to the lack of raw materials like metals, rocks, etc. | |

Agreed. If life wants to develop there, it will.

As for more advanced, sientent life, well, I don't really imagine it being all that plausible. Life would probably evolve, if it does at all, by the cells evolving gas filled vesicles. This would require Cells to use Buoyancy Calculations, which we would probably have to do any way. This Planet Editor seems a little confined. Also, I thought that editing the planet will be done in God Mode, in-game.

| Hey, just thought of something: how will these planets be spawned? Randomly placed in unexplored systems? | |

| @Gamer: What about the editor is confined? It seems like it has every reasonable tool included. And all the editors will be available through the main menu, as well as in the game.
@Zim: If there is a check for the right kind of star and it's properties, then i guess that would be the easiest way to do it.

| It just seems that the Editor's tools are too specific. I thought that in God-Mode the player will use God Powers to change the planet without having to enter an Editor at all. | |

They can change it, 'casting' volcanoes and earthquakes on whatever unlucky place is below them, but any big change such as altering tectonic plates, changing ratios of different gases etc. would be best in an editor.

For ease, on both the part of the programmer and the player, an editor for planets and celestial objects makes sense. You can still move things around and junk when you're in planet view or whatever in God Mode.
