| Hello! I'm from Buenos Aires, Argentina. I am a journalism student (actually, study "social communication" that includes other things as well). And when I heard about the project Thrive wanted to investigate more, and participate.
Since leaving Spore, I played with enthusiasm and participated in forums about it. On a forum was born the idea of creating a "spore improved", which came to nothing because we haven't the technology and skill to do it.
When I heard abaut Thrive, I knew I wanted to participate. And I knew that's what I want do in the project: The story!
(Sorry if you do not understand some of the text, the text is translated by google translate. I know a little English, but now preferred to write in Spanish to do faster.)
As you know, many of the "critics" that took Spore was his little story. People want to be free in the game, have a good chance, that's true, but also wants a motivation. They want to know that they are part of something interesting. They want to see how they affect a story and how they can overcome obstacles. They want to see sights and meet realities.
Just as literature, in its plot, provides excitement, adventure and many interesting things, games succeed in several ways: The idea of the game is a way (evolution), the mechanics is another (the stages and its objectives), and the story is other.
What I mean with "do the story"?
Ok. I intend to write a series of missions that reveal all kinds of mysterys. The player could play the missions if you wanted, or ignore them completely. Missions should at all stages and in all modes (god mode, strategic, or individual).
>> The single player missions function as those of an RPG: You overcome goals while providing you information about the world.
In the space stage in single, while walking out there you'd find people ask favors, and maybe give you simple rewards (medals or some object). These missions will paint the landscape such as alien empires, and the history of the universe. Born life on your planet or wine for panspermia? Or some other intelligent species brought it before?
Who are these Grox of which everyone speaks (No joke, joke, that's Spore)?
Similarly work in the society stage. Although at this stage would make stories more everyday. It could be like a GTA V, or as an actual RPG, as Shooter ... Just a story that paints the landscape of the nation and the world.
At the stage where you're an organism, a creature, missions would be simple adventures. You enter a cave, you discover something strange writings, or a monolith, parts of a spaceship... These "simple adventures" give preliminary information, which then will serve in more advanced stages. Then I found these metals as a organism, were really parts of the empire ship planted life on my planet? But to find out, I had to move several steps and do more missions!
It is also possible for the cells making up stories. You just have to get creative and think like squaring that in the history of your planet and the entire universe.
At the end of the day, you will have many stories. The most important: How did the universe and life, your world and your kind. What was before, what will be after the end of time, and because your participation was important. Everything about why attain enlightenment (this is called so?), and how you will influence in the story of your universe.
I have many more ideas, I have some difficulties to explain right now.

| Welcome Jose to Thrive!
Unfortunately, Thrive has no story, because it's a sandbox game. The only story in the game is the story of the player's progression from a simple cell, to a space-faring civilization. The player sets their own goals, but the underlying goal is essentially to advance to the next stage, once you've had your fun, or to at least survive against your competition, whatever form that competition may take.

| Welcome to the forum, Jose!
As Nick said before me, Thrive will have no story- you, the player, will be the one that makes the story, the story of your species. Since so many aspects of the game will be procedurally generated, it would be very hard to actually adapt a story to an unpredictable landscape.
Also, the way you are describing it (missions, constantly) it looks more to me like an RPG rather than a sandbox evolution sim. In the space stage, you won't be commanding a single ship like in spore, but rather a whole empire RTS style.

| Sandbox sometimes have story, like GTA V. Or maybe GTA is open world, it isnĀ“t important.
If thrive is like spore, will have story. Spore have it (initial meteorite, grox, Staff of Life, etc). Surely thrive will have these "stories" (even without missions), maybe you name it different.
Everything has a story. For example: If life was created, or brought by panspermia, that's a story.

| GTA is an open-world game, as is TES, for example. Minecraft and rollercoaster tycoon are sandboxes'. You can see the difference- GTA and TES have a story, Minecraft and Rollercoaster tycoon don't. An open-world game is a game where the player is simply free to roam the game world and progress the story at any time he wants, but the story is still there, while sandboxes' have no story (like Minecraft) or nearly no story (Rollercoaster tycoon, if you take the campaign as some sort of story). - JoseGarciaConi wrote:

Well, this is more of a personal philosophy, but not everything is a story. To me personally, a story is a group of multiple interconnected events or a group of events leading to one result. That said, the player will, I repeat, be the one to make the story- They will evolve their creature, which will lead to certain events that would continue to affect the future etc. With the current concept of Thrive, you could literally write a book just about a story about one of your species, so there is no need for some background story.

| To add to what Tarpy said, GTA is not a sandbox.
Spore had a story, but that doesn't necessitate that Thrive requires one. Thrive was conceived out of Spore's failures. Plus, the existence of powerful races such as the Grox doesn't need to be hardcoded in. When you reach the space stage it will be natural to have some civilizations ahead of you in technology and power.
Lastly, biogenesis does not concern Thrive, because Thrive's timespan begins from after life has already begun.
The beauty of a sandbox like Thrive is that stories will dynamically be created just by the player playing it. They don't need to be hardcoded in, and doing so would actually ruin it. Also, many of the ideas you suggested for adding to the "story" would just be plain impossible to expect for a game like Thrive.

| Ok, well. I wish that Thrive has a story. If it haven't story, no matter, but I figured with. And I had many ideas about it, many plans, etc.
Maybe I am who does the first Thrive mod!

| Lack of a story will increase replay-ability tenfold. | |
