I am in no uncertain terms NOT a Nazi in any way shape or form.

Now that that's out of the way, my name, as far as you need to know, is Notsae66 and while I have little experience on the technical side of things (I know a little c++), I do have quite a few ideas that are (At least as far as I know
) scientifically plausible. (Also I am currently the lead for a different game currently in development)

 I am also evil to an extreme!

Hey there & Welcome!

If you are interested in joining in on the programming side of things I'll be happy to help you get started and answer any questions!
There is plenty of assignments on github https://github.com/Revolutionary-Games/Thrive/issues?state=open that would be easy to get started with whether you want to do Programming in Lua or C++.

I have read some topics, I know underwater civilizations are not going to happen.

... Or at least they will, but nothing beyond stone; cities are possible due to agriculture being available, but nothing beyond metal, so spaceflight's a no-go unless someone somehow exploits bugs and glitches to do so.

Speaking of those, think anyone'll try to "speedrun" the game? It sounds like a fun thing to do. If I gave it a try, I'd have some kind of adaptable bird-thing with leaf-wings and manipulative arm-legs, and a digestive system made for whatever's available, especially when sunlight's a no-go.

Could be interesting to see... I'm almost certain that this game will get a massive publicity boost if and when it hits youtube, similar to spore. People will play it, talk about it, others will hear about it, then it hits stuff like gamers on youtube and more people hear about it. A good idea for when the game is finished (or almost finished) is too try to atract big(ish) name attention.

Hey so I'm super surprised nobody's asked you about the game you're a lead for. I'm very curious, what'd this game you were (and possibly still are) working on?

I would probably go for a leathery, social, coastal octopode/squid thing. My reasoning:

I want to avoid as many major body changes as possible (restrict them to early multicellular), so I probably want to be amphibious. Why? Since player evolution is player-directed, I'm able to direct my evolution to things that will increase intelligence. Graspers and eyes are the things I'd want to focus earliest on. Hydrostatic skeletons were some of the earliest muscular systems to evolve (and evolve large amounts of complexity), and the higher-dimensionality the space of possible conscious muscle movements is, the more developed spatial-reasoning parts of the brain must be. Again, more intelligence, faster. With the focus on spatial reasoning, it makes sense that I'd emphasize vision.

Why leathery? Metalworking. Not only does it require leaving the ocean, but it requires working with hot, dry fire. A thick, leathery skin would not only keep the water in, but also shield well against fire when working with it.

I'd probably try to base early society on gathering coastal plants and plant-like things, with organized expeditions deeper into the ocean, to net swarming fish, and hunt larger sea-creatures. That gives me an opening and impetus to develop agriculture, another to develop weaving (and thus the gathering/domestication of a non-food organism for the fibers), another to develop spears (stabbing weapons being the only ones really usable in water), and some early social structures. Then aquaculture/agriculture, boats, shelter, settlement-forming, and it all snowballs from there.

So I ended up fanboying over nonexistent game features, oops ehehe. I'll take it to the subreddit.

And phallic monsters everywhere! Carefully designed so they actually have a shot at survival, of course.

Reminds me of the Concept Race thing, except more Thrive-orientated. Lovely. Kind of tempting to set up a Reddit account so I can talk about my photosynthetic bat people.

Complete with the inevitable phallic speedrun competition. I don't want to think of the things people'll make...

The game I'm a lead in? The basis is that anything you can do in real life (and a lot that you can't) you can do in the game. The main "goal" in the game is to insure your own existence forever, by whatever means necessary. Its called [Lines].
I've worked a little with the coding but mostly I organize it.

Any links to this game called [Lines]? I'm curious.

Welcome to the project. Always nice to see someone with some technical knowhow.

And don't worry, I don't think you're a Nazi or anything like that. Seeing our post reminded me of this: http://humon.deviantart.com/art/Not-a-Yahtzee-151475911 (In a good way, don't worry)

This thread rekindled my interest in this game. This weekend I'm gonna start learning Lua (I think). I can't wait for this game... When I first bought spore (I was pretty young then) I hadn't really had high expectations for games and I loved it. Then I learned what it was supposed to be... Still I enjoyed it and I want something with better replayability (caynt spel) and more to it. What better way to do that than to actually help make it happen!

Anyway if I was gonna do a speed run, I would pretty much go with moonpli's because I'm bad at speedruns and his is probably a good way to go.
