PostSubject: Presentation of Aplication for Programation.   Thu Dec 25, 2014 10:52 pm

Hello everybody, I'm froskvs and I'm interested in the game and I would like to help programming it. I know a few of programming languages (c++ and lisp). I read that the game is being programmed in c++ and Ogre, I would be thankful if somebody could help me with ogre because I'm not acquainted with it.

Welcome to Thrive froskvs!

As you noted the game is being programmed in C++, but also largely in Python Lua as well. Ogre is the name of the engine it runs on. The repository for all our code can be found here (also linked on the side panel):

https://github.com/Revolutionary-Games/Thrive

Do you have experience with game development before? Do you have ideas of what fields in terms of game development you looking to contribute to?

EDIT: What's sad is that I knew it was Lua and I still wrote Python.

Although similar, what NickTheNick meant to say was it was also being developed using lua

Your first steps would be to clone the git repository that NickTheNick linked!
If you're on windows, the readme there will have you run a powershell script that sets up an environment required for building Thrive, but if you'd like to take a slightly easier route less prone to errors, you can download the required environment from here: https://mega.co.nz/#!pAJgCADK!JZrwB4a2dw-3TBXGj_AImOysEazeVWXm_F_lfxUr7_Q note that you will want to have it be located as C:\mingw specifically for it to work properly (I should have fixed this requirement by now).

If you have any questions and/or need help feel free to ask me here or on skype (jjonjex).

For a lot of work you won't have to worry about Ogre at all. Ogre is a pretty powerful open-source graphics engine, and works using a more-or-less-standard tree of SceneNodes. Skim through the basic tut for more.

We, like basically all games nowadays (for example, anything Unity), use ECS for game-object-management, and I'm quite sure we use a port of Artemis for that. So, for example, if you looked through the Lua scripts, you would see that a lot of the functionality for things is within components and systems.

Once you've got the repo cloned (or downloaded off crovea's link) and Thrive building correctly, we'll get you set with a simple bug or something, and we'll go from there!

How's that sound?

Edit: ah yes, here's a diagram crovea made recently outlining the general architecture.

We recently tried moving to 14, and it worked out pretty well but someone was unable to build the project so we're back on 11. So far we only build with GCC, since I'm on linux and our windows build script uses MinGW. I'm using GCC 4.8.2, though I think 4.7 supports the features we need. Better to stick to 4.8 if you can, I recall having build issues when I first started, and I think I was on 4.7.

If you want to try using MSVC or Clang (or Borland or something, if you prefer), it might work, it might not, no guarantees. On a hunch, I'd suspect Clang would work, but I haven't tried. Anyway, it's certainly easiest if we all stick to the same compiler.

If you're running windows, you will really just want to run the setup script from git or download the directory from mega I linked previously!
Setting everything up manually would be a massive pain!
