PostSubject: The great list of evolution simulators and resources   Sun Dec 05, 2010 1:09 pm

We have several evolution-focused games around which could help us discuss the in-game evolution aspect, plus they make for already done prototypes which we could dissect to analyze different aspects.
I'm putting up a partial list here, if anyone can remember more games please post and I'll edit this list.

El-fish
Allowed the player to selectively breed fishies for interesting charachteristics.

SimLife

Genetic simulation game based on genetic laws, allows for some fun mechanics.

Darwinbots

Excellent evolution game based on cellular automata on a free grid. Allows even the existence of multicell organisms.

Breve

Breve, a GPL package of tools for assembling virtual life simulations

Breve looks interesting. Someone with coding experience should look at that.

We're going to discuss evolution more when we have a game to implement it in- right now, we just don't have enough info on our hands to set anything in stone.

Don't forget to add Thrive to the end of that list

I tried Planetoid 2: It's a bit cartoonish but it's very great! It could be an inspiration for space "stage"

No-one mentioned adding Spore to this list... And no-one is going to.

Spore = Epic Fail.

I mean, it is supposed to be an evolution game. We will achieve our goal more effectively than a company...

Let's add Thrive to the list, then:

Thrive

Thrive, a work in progress that shall simulate evolution and allow the development of complex multi-cellular organisms and sentience, and ultimately leading to ascension. However, other routes can be taken to become almost anything, including plants and possibly microbial life (bacteria).
