PostSubject: Weather in the planetary editor   Weather in the planetary editor EmptySat Apr 09, 2011 6:55 pm

This thread is basicly how to incorporate weather into the planet editor

First is type of weathers like rain, wind, storms etc
Then the propertie, witch would determine color ex.: Blue water has different chemical property than Green water
Then intensity- Basicly a slider, for example on rain, intensity 1 is like sprinkling while intesity 8 is pouring

What do you think?

We're running weather with arbitrary mechanics based on the biome you're in. Basically, the biome tells the game how much rain it can get, then the game pops in rain at random intervals. If you're in a desert, you might get a few sprinkles in a year, or you could get one small storm. In a rain forest biome, you'll get pummeled every other day.
For chemical reference, water can only be blue when pure.

Hmmm... this makes me wonder about whether our resouces should affect our weather - for example,
burning of biofuel can create sulfur wich then leads to acid rain...

The neighboring biomes should also have a say in how the weather acts, scio. After all, we can't put Death Valley next to a tropical rainforest in game, but we can put biomes in an order where certain amounts of water will precipitate earlier, because the clouds are cooling faster.

Theres a theory of mars had once had liquid water, but that water wouldnt be blue because it had a different elements than our H2O

good finally some one that agrees with me that water doesn't have to be H2O in the biome discussion i was facing a lot of critics saying no that is not possible only that

No, we need water to be water, but different elements floating around in it, such as rust, would change it's color.

Raven: water is always H2O. However, it often has other chemicals dissolved in it. However, it can form acidic solutions if acids are dissolved in it, and basic solutions if bases are dissolved in it.

ALWAYS.
ALWAYS.

You can't just have magic perfect juice running around your planet. Water is an extremely unique chemical, and it really can't be replaced by something else.

As far as we know. Not that I disagree completely, I just think the universe is a big place and ruling things out with this little of it explored seems a little foolish.

Chemistry and math are about the only things I'd say we have a working understanding of, though. (Not nano-chem, but the basics.)

I'm sure that there is some sort of life out there, somewhere, that will defy our expectations somehow. But we don't know anything even conjecturally, about the conditions in which it might live, so for now I'm sticking with good old H20.

I'm sorry, but wishful thinking is not science. H2O is water's chemical formula. There is no other way to have water, scientifcally.

To further clarify: it is hypothetically possible (though on an improbability level which will probably turn us all into doomed sperm whales) for life to exist without water.
However, water is the only water. You can't just stick some random other compound into the system and expect it to function.

Titanian life runs on methane and ethane. But they need water. It's what they walk on. And there's always ammmonia. Not pneumonia. XD
