The trouble is without a background to work with, i don't know what will. On white the cells look a lot more solid than they do on black or green, for instance. Someone want to do a concept of what the backdrop would look like, and i'll try them out on that?
If you're using GIMP, put them on top of a layer of plasma noise. That should give you a wide range of test background colors.
Well, i can use a cloud effect (some people got Photoshop last christmas, Scio :p ). But i really wanted to use something that would be really relevant. Didn't you guys discuss what the background would look like somewhere? Did anybody do any concept art?

I think any green slimy texture from Google pictures would do the job.

The forum background would do, that's quite aquatic.

The background is basically an RGB gradient with a b/w gradient determining lightness. you can do this with simple gradients. one horizontal, one vertical.

I've done another one with just the alkali (or base...) - neutral - acid colours.

Spoiler:

They're the only colours the cells really need to look any good on. Red, orange, and yellow aren't really necessary.

P.S. If anyone here has a slow internet connection, sorry, I've yet again doubled the loading time. Although, if the problem is in any way major you'll just be skipping this thread by now anyway, so you won't be reading this...

Tell me which ones you guys like best.

They seem really bright. I personally think that if #1 or 2 was coloured blue it would be pretty much perfect.

Yeah, lower the contrast and use a bluish gray color.

And it's a tile, so it can be placed next to itself and will look like one picture.

What would #2 look like with a blue-grey colour?

So this is the most promissing topic I've found! Can I help with anything? I still have some information about cells and I'm installing 3ds max in this laptop right now.
Edit: Can't install the 3D Studio...

PostSubject: Cell Phase Progress   Sat May 26, 2012 1:31 pm

This Topic is about the Progression and working of the current Cell Phase prototype, and the future one(s).
If You would like to make Your own version, and let The community test it out, to give good criticism and results, and especially whether they liked it or not, please post a link to it here on this topic. We can also discuss the stage some more, to get into more detail about the Cell Phase.
This topic was posted by: Shane, AKA MeowMan1. Thanks Guys, and I hope to have some comments on this topic soon.

I wanted to make a topic after having the AI done, but since you made this post I won't leave you waiting.

I have been working on the prototype for some time now. So far, it has cells with various properties (but no organs). The properties are all absolutely random, except for mass wich is equal to volume. Each cell falls under a type wich determines it's attributes. Collision detection works, meaning you can push smaller cells around and bounce off larger cells.

The AI isn't there yet, meaning other cells don't do anything yet. I plan to implement some simple AI first and then finally start accepting your feedback and add features you want to see.

Screenie time:

Note: Please DON'T post or link this on any other site! This thing is very basic and wouldn't make a good impression on anyone outside the team.

Download link here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/54710394/Thrive_Cellstage_26_5_2012.rar

I have compiled it under Windows XP 32-bit, so there might be trouble using it on OS. Just try it and report if there's a bug.
