Got an idea for strategy mode and view range:
In many strategy games, undiscovered parts of the map are black and if you send your troops somewhere undiscovered, the black part becomes colored. The colored area depends on the view range of your troops. So, my idea is to make undiscovered parts of the world blurred, but the further away your units are, the stronger becomes the blur effect, so you can't see the whole planet with only one unit.
What do you think?

PS: Sorry if this was already suggested, couldn't find something like this in the forums.

You're right, our ideas are similar, but my suggestion was to replace the black part of the map/planet/whatever with a blurred version of the planet, until you send someone there to scout that area. This way it's not like in Spore, but also different to all the popular strategy games I know.

Fog of war already does that. Anything not in your line of sight, but previously discovered, remains visible in the fog of war like the right half of this map.

Anything not in your line of sight, and not discovered either, is completely black.

The original thread you posted that in was terribly irrelevant, so I moved it here. Please use this as a miscellaneous questions thread.

Space ship means space ship. Belgium is a word we use instead of swear words. You can do the math.

Wormholes I am not sure about.

Just as a side note, try to separate your questions to make each one easier to identify.

Gas giants can be entered, yes.

Sol system will probably be an added Easter Egg.

Space stations for sure.

I have a question for which you surely already responded, but I have not found.

If we get to a point in the game where our race is extinguished for any reason (natural patterns, domain from another race, alien invasion, pollution) and we lose, where we can start the game?

I think it's highly scientific and realistic restart the game from the start so that every player should dedicate themselves to, and access to the final stages of the game (such as the phase space) is something challenging but satisfying.

I asked about that once, don't think there was much discussion, In my prototype if you die you just gain control over the nearest creature that is of your species, maybe we will do it that way.

In particular, the cellular stage it is normal that if you die you go to the control of another cell. I meant just when your race or your planet is completely destroyed what happens.

In my opinion that would be a little too cruel. Maybe the player gets to choose a save file and start again from that point?

Well obviously, there's nothing stopping the player from reloading an earlier save. Think of dying in the Elder Scrolls series.

Or the player could choose a difficulty very specific: One difficulty called "realism" that the player chooses is aware that once defeat his kind, he is forced to start over.

In every single Strategy game that i've seen, if you lose every single of your controled units, then it is game over, and you have to start over or load an older game.

However, if you are in creature mode, when you die, you just spawn as a different creature of your same species.

Finally, while you are in creature mode and you are on society stage, there will be an AI controling your species. We should make it so the AI never suicides itself, for the players that only want to play on creature mode. It is not the player's fault if its AI decides to suicide itself making him lose the game.

Edit: Anyway, what were you going to do when the player's specie goes extint? What other choice is there other than game over?

So well need good AI.

Anywys, i once noted about my dificulities ideas. I have fixed it and this is my idea:

When player starts new game, computer will ask him to choose one of difficulities:

Easy- Game starts on earth like planet, AI is less agressive. Less catastrophes (meteor strikes, tornadoes, volcano eruptions) and you star will ,,live'' (wont supernova) in longer time.

Normal/Realistic- Game starts on earth like planet, everything is balanced.

Hard- Game starts on randomly choosen or warm, or cold planet, alot of aggresive AI, more catastrophes and shorter stars ,,live''.

Extreme/Pro- Game starts on extremely warm (like Tatooine) or extremely cold (like Hoth) planet.
AI is very agressive and other creatures are mostly very strong, often catastrophes (On cold planets blizzards, on warm sandstroms), star ,,lives'' like in hard mode.

What about idea?

Also, i know Easters have diferent time, so those who have Easter in saturday... Happy Easter! And its my sisters birthday to.

Great ideas, however I am still partial to the idea of a 'Hardcore mode' (Hardcore mode would be like hard or realistic mode (in terms of Williams difficulty ideas)) the only difference being that once your species dies out you have a game over (permadeath) so you have to start a new game.

I dont mind the idea of harcore mode, where going extint means that your savegames get deleted when your species gets extint. There should be another super-harcore mode where dying once in creature mode also makes you lose your savefiles. As long as they are optional, there is barely any dificulty into coding that.

However, i dont think dificulty should affect conditions of the planet. As i alredy said somewhere else on another post, that doesent affect dificulty. If you have a very cold climate, you will have more dificulty evolving, as you have to spend more time adapting for your environement, but the oposing species have to do it as well, so you have equal oportunities as them. For easy climates, its the same. You have an easier time evolving as you want, but the other species have an easy time as well.

The best way of adding dificulty (as i see it) would be to give AI more "mutations" each cycle, so they can evolve faster on higher dificulties. Or we could tweak the AI, but we need the AI before that. There are some games where AI is well done and needs to be dumbed down a LOT before any human oponent can face it, and there are cases where AI is dumb alredy and needs to be bufed a lot so good players have a challenge. However, this is something we will have to do once the game is done. There in so way of calculating balance untill we have the game itself.

Well, evolving in a cold climate doesn't mean evolving is more difficult, just that beings need different attributes-thick fur, fat, larger body, antifreeze? I don't know and about the stars i think players will get really frustrated just starting their mind blowing experience on hard mode and 2 hours later GAME OVER cause the star just went super nova, what are they to do when they are lets say still a microbe, colonize other worlds with meteorites? I don't mean to bash just my 2 cents.

There should be nothing that can kill the player without the player being able to do sonething to avoid it. Even in hardest dificulties, no star should go supernova before the player has the hability to colonize other solar systems.

I like the robot idea, we could make them to battle, extract, explore, etc, but the ship interior would be a little useless i guess
