PostSubject: Urban Enviroments   Urban Enviroments EmptySat Sep 13, 2014 2:41 pm

Hi, i'm new here and i had and i had a suggestion that i couldn't find anywhere else on the forum: Urban environments. i know this would be something very complex and difficult to accomplish but it would be extremely interesting to see in-game. the only problem i see is would the civilization still be around when you reach the awakening stage? i think that the civilization could either die out or possibly move on from their planet. any more ideas for this subject?

Hello and welcome to Thrive! I would love to be an animal in an urban environment and I think it's a great idea. (I was thinking of a peregrine falcon type thing). I'm no programmer, but it could be just too much for a computer too handle to generate cities to such detail that you would feel immersed in it as a creature. I could be wrong but that's how it seems to me.

I don't see a problem of the civilisation (correct spelling :D) being around once you reach awakening. It would mean that you would probably have to leave the city and found your own society because I don't think multi-race nations are a thing at the moment.

Also, in future, topics like this should first be brought up in the miscellaneous thread. Thank you and welcome.

Technologically, it's possible. There's loads of work being done right now (not on thrive, but by games companies and stuff) to generate realistic cities procedurally, some in real-time too. By the time we progress far enough, I'd wager we'll have lots of prior art to work off of. The bigger problem in terms of thrive though is that the timescales are very skewed between Aware and Society stages -- since Aware stage plays over millions of years, but Society over thousands and Industrial over decades, a few minutes of gameplay in Aware stage should technically see the rise of a civilization from nothing, their flight into space, and possibly even their complete disappearance when they ascend (or destroy themselves or something). Luckily, while the time you have in which you can live in a city still inhabited by its creator species is short, you'll at least have loads of ruins to wander through. Just that possibility alone would make for a really awesome game, actually.
