Spectator vs. Participator Empty
PostSubject: Spectator vs. Participator   Spectator vs. Participator EmptyWed Oct 27, 2010 7:48 pm

Just an idea:

All arts, sports, games, etc. could take one of two forms: They are either participatory or spectated. All entertainment would be participatory until Athletics is researched(Arena is unlocked then).

Participatory entertainment is, as it sounds, entertainment where the point is to enjoy it through doing it yourself. While this has an obvious effect on the appearance, it also effects gameplay. Participatory entertainment is cheap and therefore frequent, easily put together. It usually reflects the culture, either through subject, style, or commonality.

Spectated entertainment is entertainment where the enjoyment is found through watching it. These large, expensive productions give larger boosts to happiness, but as I said, are more costly. They also can get points across faster, and can be used as an outlet for propaganda.

Any thoughts?

So would these be traits that also have an effect on the visuals?

I think he means visually as in, the player that is either participating or spectating can tell the difference between the two roles, as placement and actions are different (though a spectator can go wild and join the feud, but still count as a spectator as he's not supposed to be in the participator's area).. not affecting the game's graphics, or design of the arena, really.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

As for the idea itself, it's simple but effective. I say yes.

Well, these also have an effect on gameplay. Spectated entertainment can be government funded/supported/controlled, but particapatory entertainment can't be (Though it can be banned). So on and so forth.
