| Doubt it. since everything is going to be run arbitrarily, you'll have nothing to gain from sneakinf=g around in another nation, because their actions will be mostly random. | |

| Actually, I think we should implement an Espionage system similar to the one found in Paradox Interactive's Hearts of Iron, a World War II Grand Strategy game. Its a pretty simple system, you assign spies to a country and give them a task. These tasks include espionage, counter-espionage, sabotage, and propaganda.
Espionage is used to gather information and is divided into research, political, industrial, and military espionage. It will only display statistics, which may only be rough estimates if the spy isn't good enough or that country has a lot of counter-espionage going. It won't tell you what the country is planning, but this information is still useful for planning purposes. Want to go to war with someone but aren't sure how powerful their military is? Send a spy on a military espionage mission.
Counter-espionage is used to prevent spies from operating in that country, you can send spies on these missions to help yourself or your allies.
Sabotage is used to damage or disrupt something within a county, it is also broken into research, political, industrial, and military. Research sabotage can slow down that counties research projects. Political sabotage is used to disrupt the ruling government, it can be used to incite rebellions or support political parties that match your own ideals. Industrial sabotage will disrupt that countries production or economy. Lastly military sabotage, it disrupts the chain of command and sabotages their logistics systems. These missions are the hardest to pull off, but produce the most results.
Propaganda missions are used to influence the civilian population of the country.
Would something like this be possible?

Maybe. Evolutionarily speaking, stealth is one the most commonly utilized survival tactics. It'd be tossing a lot to remove it. Espionage in terms of pretending to be someone else is probably too difficult, but sneaking about is probably neccisary. Also, historical Ninjas: These are to Terrorists as Privateers are to Pirates.

Would something like this be possible? I like that. Maybe the more spies sent into a mission = the more knowledge gain, but higher risk of detection? Also, we need some researches for espionage (mostly improving it).

Actually, If you send two spies, then one is more likely to be caught, but if they do suspect a spy, then once they find one they will stop looking, and be convinced there is no spy, and any news there is a spy they'll say is 'outdated', and so the other would be safer, at least for a short time.

Funny logic, unfortunately untrue. The contras never stop looking.

We could throw them in as Inventions, if we use my Research Tree idea anyway.

So what technologies and concepts would be required for it?

| I like Smothmoth's ideas for espionage. Being able to get a rough estimate of troop and technology numbers would be good. | |

Spying was there back when humans were still in tribes, so the option of "espionage" should be there right from the beginning. Dedicated counter-espionage showed up much, much later, as dedicated espionage institutions did. I don't know how that much about modern spies, so we will need a bit of research there.

Well, to my knowledge it's a slow, steady increase from there with no really identifiable marks.

| I would say we throw in an Espionage invention in each of the various "War Theory" type researches, each level you discover enables more features of the espionage system.
Also, don't give me credit for this idea, this is just the system as it exists in Hearts of Iron. Paradox Interactive has many other Grand Strategy games, covering everything from Ancient Roman times to the near future. They have lots of concepts and mechanics that would fit in very well with our strategy mode, would anyone be interested in hearing about any of these? If so I'll make a thread about it somewhere.
