Or at least the name of my avatar here i made a bit ponified, what was because the first question i had and why i have registered in the first time was about a pony species
Heard about this project for about a week and the concept looks fantastic and if this get really done like this, i think it will become my most favorite game.
I am from germany, so if my english isn't so perfect, i have to apologize.

WELCOME!!!

Finally, I had a chance to welcome somebody. Good to see another person on the team. Are you good at programming? Or are you more of an idea person? If you're more of an Idea person, they'll put you in a little jar, stir you up until your ideas come out, and then label that jar of ideas. As you can probably tell, I haven't had that happen yet.

Oh yeah, "They" being:

The Uteen, the sandbox leader.

Mysterious Calliographer, the biome leader.

Gotrol, the art leader.

Hongchong7, the music leader.

Tenebrarum, the society leader.

Commander keen, the industrial leader.

US-of-Alaska, the overall team co-leader.

And Sciocont, the Overall team lead.

And a whole wack of others that I'm to lazy to name.

Thx for the welcome. Ok, there seems to be really some peoples in the development team. Already saw Sciocont and The Uteen active in the forum.
But well from the programmers seems to be nobody active anymore. :/

Well, i already posted some ideas on the forum, but programming is a bit of a problem. In October i will start a short computer science studium. I hope that i have some time after it and that i am able to programm then somewhat. Until then i can try to get some ideas into the forum, who aren't hopefully all pony related.
But well i already tought about working out a pony species. But this would also need a paranormal mod pack with some psychic abilities. But think such a mod woudn't wait for to long.

There's actually quite a few programmers active including myself.
My estimate would be about 5 or so programmers.

Ah, thats good to here, as i was reading the forum it sound quite, that the forum is completly out of programmers.
I personally was also considering if i could join sometime, but problem is, that i will have to finish a study first and i will have much more to do there with java and not so much with C++. But after this i could imagine to help here a bit to learn some C++, also when i think i woudn't make to much progress. But think its better as nothing then. But this would take at least 1 year.
But if this game will be done, it would be really epic, also because its open source. So a huge mod plattform where u can build every game on you can think. RPG, racing, strategy, spacesim, being a god, etc.

Oh, you don't need mods for that… Just Sandbox Mode!

Anyway, welcome!
If you've missed the recent programming boom, you ought to check out this thread. It's the place to go for all the latest programming-related news and jargon.

P.S. Orygandian2, I don't think that list is very up to date. Not many of them are visit anymore, and one has officially left. We really should update the team leads list soon, it has members that have officially left on it… And by we, I basically mean Scio, since it is his list. Please?

lol And i thought i found the most threads now.
Ok, to here that there are already some programmer working on it seems to be a good news. Have also watched in the Ogre3D engine and also some videos (also the demo videos) and the engine also doesn't looking bad. So if thrive will look like this, it would be cool. And this seems also to be able to run Direct3D and Open GL. So donno much over grafic engine, but i could life with it.

PS: Someday, i will find the hiding spots of the last remaining importent threads.

That will need some messing with the code of the game, I would also like to point out that you shoulden't get all hyped about this, Cus if this stage of the game will ever come out, it will be in a few years.

Indeed, its a very huge project. Would it come out it would revolutionize the game world. But atm its still a huge dream. But what can we do best about huge dreams? Dreaming them.

Actually its looking very nice for the game, because they have a bunch of programmers. And even some, who have some experiance. And they seems to go the right way now also by finishing the first stage. I don't want to patronize them (its even not nessesarly, because they are going the right way already), but the most imporant thing is now to create the game after the slogan "As much as necessary, as little as possible." I know for myself, that i have a lot of ideas i would be glad to be seen in the game. But for the first it looks like there are more as enough ideas around and the key way is now to get a working construct. It doesn't needs to be perfect, it yust has to have , what is naccesarly to add the additional features. So get one of the stages running after another, that a simple playable version is avaible, that there is something to look on.
And because i have read that most devs have posted this also in the last times and this is the way who is planed now, i see a good chance, that first thinks would be lookable soon. And this will be the real start of the finishing of the game. I saw this from other projects all again. If its only a huge conecpt and nothing is happening, the concept is breaking down sometime. If the conecept is worked with little steps and there game if growing on a prototyp, it will continue develop, peoples will come, trying and playing it, if the game is open, they will start to mod, add things on their own, the devs can motivate some members of the modding community also to their team, because they see that the game is developing and they have anything and then it will really start to grow epicly and we have are already nearly at the goal of the finished game.

So keep up the good work and the way and i think Pinkie Pie can start to plan the release party very soon.

Well, I think you are right, we need a prototype first, not the full game or something.

Yes, heard about this already. Problem is, most of the game is from the ideas already so well worked out, that i don't have much ideas to add, who aren't pony related. And very good idea who would make the project even bigger, would be more a break down of the project in the current stage as a help. They would be good for later but not for now.
Thing who can be make is to inform other players about the program. I already did this, but most of them are looking on it as vapoware and this seems the hugest problems. But well actually the way seems to be already the right one and when the first version of the first stage is out, i think they will see, that there is actually more behind, as a great idea.
And as long i can't add really help to the project, its a bit difficult to see me self as a part of the developer.

The problem, that in a way, we are working on a Vapoware, The game will be so big, I don't know if we will ever have the chance to finish it.

"Finish it" is such a special term. I know many projects, who are in work since many years, are already released and are still worked on. What i see its not a project for finish and release. This might indeed not work and will lead to becoming a vapoware.

Don't know how long the project exist, there have never seen any playable prototyp out there. At least one real working game relevant prototyp with the engine of the game who looks like the game. One time somebody tried to build its own engine for the game, but left then and the engine was never finished. So only thing what happend is, that there is a very huge and nice concept. For now peoples always think uhh, vapoware and they would never finish it, because there is nothing.

But now atm i see something changing. Possible that this happend before, but the project seems to be on the right way for me. What i have read they are actually working on the microbe state and planning to release an alpha of it. That the best step they can make. And they got some programmers in the team. With year long experience and even peoples who have a huge knowledge of biology and math. So we don't simply have some peoples here, with a huge dream but no knowledge, we have peoples here now, who know how to program a game and who know a lot about biology and procedural development.

And this is also the message who should be shown. I would aswell suggest to give the programmers specific titles if they want. As example "Programmer" and "Programming Team Lead" that peoples see, that this is a construction area here.

For me the best way to get the game done, would be:

1. Finish a working simple version of the Microbe stage by showing the progress.
It should have everything it would need to work, but not with every gimmick.

[Actually i noticed, thats the way the development is going now.]

When the first stage is out, there is already something peoples can play with and this will also tell the word, hey, we are alive. Here is really a game in development and the microbe stage is finished already.

Following should be the stages after another so we get a more and more working concept. Include everything what is needed for the actual state and then work on the next. With growing game, we will got more and more modders who will start working on the game and including more and more gimmicks.

So yust call me naive, but at the moment it looks very good for the game and the game has a good chance to develop. Its actually only the most difficult step to get started. After this is done it could look very nice.

How told before, its actual a game concept, people are thinking its way to huge and this can't work, but it sounds fantastic. If they notice, that there is going something forward and the game develops, i doesn't think we would have to less member. At least i offen don't know any open source game project with such a wonderful concept.

And i have already seen projects from only one single programmer who looks really great. And here are already more peoples on work. And as more peoples we get, as faster the game will develop.

That is exactly what I believe. It is impossible to "finish" such a game. We can only keep improving. An example I like to use is Minecraft. Do you think Notch and Mojang would have been able to create all of Minecraft as we know it today in just one release and then have been done with it? No, of course not. They released it and worked on it step by step. That's what you do for game projects of epic scale, and that's what Thrive is, a game project of epic scale.

Yep, indeed. I know other projects like this also. Ok, not so huge, but still very huge. Kerbal Space Programm as example.

The plan is to build a epic space game also with sandbox, a procedural galaxy, with landing, build your own ships, manage a space center, run trough the ship, go on advanture outside the ship, etc.

It started by having some parts and the home planet, aswell 2 moons. The game is evolving also bigger and bigger. It has running around with the kerbals outside already, spaceplanes, much more parts and in the next update we get the first half of the whole star system. And the mod community and the fan base is already very huge. That seems to be also the normal way now. To build the game part for part and have a playable version very early, who gets build up more and more. And don't forget. Thrive is a open source and free product. So the community can grow even more. And with open source the people would start to mod and build and i think many of them would also be happy to contribute by the program.

But actually we don't have to scream about the team. They want to get the first stage up and running. This would show already, that Thrive is alive.
