for those who want to get started in it, i recomend this book, you can get the PDF version in the internet.

http://www.amazon.com/Texturing-Modeling-Third-Edition-Procedural/dp/1558608486

an article i found about the Cubic Sphere method (like SPORE's Planets):

http://www.nullpointer.co.uk/content/?p=393

more articles i found:

http://acko.net/blog/making-worlds-1-of-spheres-and-cubes/

http://www-cs-students.stanford.edu/~amitp/game-programming/polygon-map-generation/ (this one is about 2D maps but hey, it shows how to implement biomes and water bodies).

also i recomend this blog:

http://procworld.blogspot.com/

hope this helps to the project. i havent commented in months.
