NickTheNick made me do this. His suggested title: Greetings from your local vegetarian-crypto-anarchic-atheistic-linux-lover-musician


I've been lurking here for some manner of time. NickTheNick introduced me to this project around the time that he started to get involved, given my interest free software and Linux. obligatory spore comment I'd definitely love to help out however I may, but I'm afraid that I don't have any particular specialization.

As far as my abilities go:

  • I'm experienced with Linux (and a minor amount with BSD), and I have decent knowledge about free software.
  • I'm somewhat proficient in Photoshop (and to a lesser extent Gimp) having messed around with astral/planetary and pixel art before.
  • I'm attempting to learn (slowly) how to write C. I can possibly hack together a bit of Ruby or Python, at least.
  • I can certainly help tweak gameplay mechanics, and I'm a wealth of ideas.
  • I could probably host a server or two given time, if needed for any reason.

One of my main areas of interest is helping out with the algorithms to generate planets. I've always had a particular interest in astrosciences.
I also proposed the idea of using the id Tech 4 engine to Nick. I'm not sure if it's possible given the current stage of development, but it's also GPL licensed. As far as my technical knowledge enables me to know, it would also appear to be more advanced than the OGRE engine. However, it would appear as if everyone is rather set on sticking with OGRE. Let me know your thoughts.

There's no need to be modest, those skills in art and coding will most definitely be useful. I think I've already linked you the wiki page on planet gen so you could take a look, but beware, its quite a load.

It'll be nice to have you around the forums.

Another thing that I had suggested to Nick was the possibility of previous attempts at colonization on planets from a sentient race not native to said planet. So, you could say, find some ruins of an attempted civilization. More realistically, you might flora and fauna on the planet that could also be found on other planets. As they tried to colonize planets, the species might have attempted to cultivate the land and farm crops native to their homeworld. More interestingly, even, they might have scarred the planet in some form if their primary goal was mining.

That sounds interesting. Altough, if they're colonization attempts wasn't were newly, the fauna and flora might have changed a bit in it's (popably) new climate, not making it exactly the same as it was when it came there, differing it from the flora and fauna on the colonizers-to-bes homeworld.

If you wanna make some 2d art, there's a list of what needs to be done here (in the third post, altough there's not something specific there at the moment).
