[ARC] There seems to be another project out with the same goals as us

I think it was called Watcher, it was a editor that had most functional basic but need some very major work done on it. I think we tried to contact the person who made it but I can't remember what he said.

Watcher. That might be it. Anyways, the guy who had done the project gave up on it after the Spore creature creator came out. He said that he wouldn't be able to get close to that standard. As we want to get to a higher standard, i doubt he'll be willing to help. And if no one answered already, Bashi, that link was to a 2d program, yes.

He put alot of work in it, it looks pretty cool, but we're going in a completely different direction procedurally. In order to get more realistic creatures, we have to alter the skin-wrapping algorithm. (the spore and watcher algorithms are metaball, which is a layer of 2 technologies.)

I'm going for a more complicated approach. I'm thinking the best way to achieve realistic wrapping is to take the metaball-points-at-evenly-space-intervals and rendering every internal bone/organ/muscle/whatever to a scalar field, then "metaballing" the field and producing a hull (kinda like an insane 3d spline)

Well, the Evolutions forums were promptly wiped after our little rebellion, so we can't access it anymore.

Yes. It's all thanks to our old "leader", Sven Littkowski. He was never there to admin the site. When we all agreed on chages to certain changes to the site, Sven ignored it. When we left, he made up a sad little story to tell his next subjects. He said we uploaded viruses and porn to his forum (or something along those lines) and he had to wipe it. In reality there was no viruses OR porn, but there was quite a bit of flaming.


I think it's his insane definition of the word "comedy".

Actually, some of the adbots were porn...

I'm very happy that i understood almost all of that. I knew we wouldn't be using the direct metaballs approach, and i was going to ask you if we were using them and where, but now i don't need to.
Also, when the hull is created, the inner contents (bones, muscle, organs) will pretty much be gone during gameplay, right?

I think they will be, but they would be represented as a texture or something if something makes an organism's insides spill out.

I'm pretty sure the thread was eaten by Melvin (the infamous Sporum Glitch that deletes threads at random), whether before or afterwards.

WOW, it still seems to be creeping along at a snails pace. i mean most of the topics haven't been commented on since the whole splitting up, but there are a few that were commented recently like a few days ago. either way, it seems very unproductive and i doubt it will ever be completed (i also discovered that we are missing bzflater just from looking at the forum). i don't think sven will be able to complete evolutions at all. the forum is still up and so is the website. a lot of new people joined but they posted in only a few topics (most were a month or two ago) and i guess they were expecting a response from us. it doesn't matter though, i just thought it was interesting.

Anyway, we've got Sven in a pretty tight place. Nowhere to turn- he has hardly any members, and they aren't commited AT ALL... I guess we've won!

i am not sure. i also discovered we are missing falling whale (well he was a lurker but he engaged in some conversations), icantguess, redstar (but he has a life so i can understand that), every mod, and i am sure there are some others, i'll do more research on the old forum.

Well, all the main folks are back. And Falling Whale? I don't remember a single time in my time in this project that saw him post- but I know who he is.

If anyone could direct me to Sven's forum, I'd do a little recruitment and a little searching for old members.

Sven's forum has fallen into chaos. I don't think I've seen any of the old members still on that forum.
