| units abilities would greatly add to the realism factor of the game
i know that there are going to be formations but i am asking about specific formations
shieldwall ability= + missile defense, -speed ,+ the units come really close so they have less chance to be flanked schiltron formation= strength in front weak in flanks http://www.croionberga.de/lexikon/schiltron.jpg
Phalanx formation=strength in front weak in flanks http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/ed/Greek_Phalanx.jpg
Infantry square=An infantry square is a combat formation an infantry unit forms in close order when threatened with cavalry attack http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/69/Butler_Lady_Quatre_Bras_1815.jpg

What does this mean? There are formations but you want specific formations? Do you mean default formations, or do you want to be able to make these?

| Oops, I forgot to update wiki with the formation editor, and the original post at the military thread is gone. Basically, there's a set of default formations like square and line, and you can also create your own formations by accessing the formation minieditor. In the formation minieditor, you can create a formation from different shapes, such as lines, rectangles, rings, etc. In combat, units are distributed over these shapes. You can also set some properties for the formation itself, such as scale of the formation, minimum and maximum of units in the formation, how loose or tight the formation and such. Then, the formation is saved and you can use it with any squad fitting the parameters defined in the formation editor. - Tenebrarum wrote:

Not so loud next time, please. At first I thought it was airstrike siren, and it's not nice being waked up by airstrike sirens at 3 am.

| As we'll have every single unit simulated (don't worry, modern computers are more than enough capable to handle this), it will in a logical way. If you make strong front and charge into enemy's flank, you are going to smash through. | |

| I think he meant units gaining special abilities from certain formations... now that is something I think will be hard to program.
EDIT: Bill, your idea sounds kind of like the Total War games, now that I think about it.

How would formation give special abilities? I don't see any reason to extend the current simulated system.

| I think he means like the Roman tortise thing. That would just be a generic square formation if they didn't use their shields the way they did. Either the engine needs to detect these kinds of things or we should let the player also set shield/weapon placement as well. I dunno just posting as I think | |

| The Roman tortoise is just a generic square formation with behavior set to "defensive". Soldiers will try to deflect incoming attacks when they can. | |

Not really, but this is very easily solved with the current unit formation mini-editor.

| Belgium me, I still haven't updated the wiki with it...
Rex, if you think there's anything more to add to the squads wiki page (and the editor paragraph especially), please tell me.
