It seems many people have ideas for theme music. Personally, I lean towards a modern classical feel, because I listen to that sort of thing quite a bit. I'd like everyone to share a few videos with music that has the kind of feel that you want from the Theme. Not the actual music, just the feeling it evokes through its style.

What I would like to feel with the game music is : mystery, relaxing yet dynamic (hard to explain what I'm getting to) and a pinch of science-fiction.
The kind of feel that I had when I listen to the cell stage music in the 2005 E3 spore demo :
Couldn't find a shorter video, it's just the ambient music at the begining.

I like these two:

I like the spaced-out, mysterious theme. May be good space or cell music.

I'd really like to at least attempt to veer away from spore's direction.

True. But Spore title music was good, the space and some of the adventure music was cool. But all the other music sucked.
In all honesty I hated the procedural tunes in the editors, and the extra notes and melodies which came in every time you added a new part or color. The music in the air vehicle editor was alright but because of the procedural beat it constantly went out of time...
I think it would be best if we didn't have procedural music.
I'm thinking something with slow, inspiring synth strings and a nice quaint re memorable melody.

I agree with this, but will reserve the right to dislike it upon hearing.

The one I've made is a draft throw together, not exactly high quality stuff and I dont expect everybody if anybody to like it. Its more or less a concept

I do think are theme should be based off an orchestral track. But we should also include some synth and ambiance in the background and between certain parts. Although an important thing to consider is that unless someone has there own usable full size orchestra (enlighten me if you do) we will have to record through sampling.
But most importantly we must make sure we have a strong melody which I promise to bring to you when inspiration hits me.
I think the next step once we have agreed on a style would be to assemble all our assets and skill to see how we are going to make this work.

I was thinking we could use garageband, or something like it if no one has a mac, because it has that mode thing where you can play different instruments through an attached keyboard or something like that. It's really useful, except it's on mac.

Maybe the music could curve towards the current situation, so it quickens when you enter combat and is more calm and relaxed while you wander around, looking for food. When you are injured it could fade away and be replaced with a heartbeat. We would kinda need a combat detector though, which may be difficut to program...

Garageband is a good program for creating tracks but I think we should use a better program for mixing. Also Mixcraft might be a PC alternative to garageband (although it isn't "free"). I do suppose that the theme will be made up of VST plugins, Sound Effects and our own recordings.
But remember Scoring is the first step!

Mixcraft is great, I have a registered version, very easy for beginners too
I would recommend it to anyone who is thinking about cooking up a theme tune.

Yeah, Mixcraft's the one I had before my computer got a virus...
I made those few songs on it that I mentioned above. It's pretty good.

Am I on the right track, do you think? Or should I listen to another song to get the general idea of what you guys want?

I don't really like the attack theme, but your first one is very good. Just add a bit of low-pitched bass sounds.

Thanks. I did mean for the attack theme to be very high-pitched, high-tech, aggressive and wierd alien song. I'm trying to make a different general musical 'theme' for each of the different main culture-types or something like that.

The songs aren't quite polished in my opinion. Have you ever considered mixing a little? Try fooling around with reverb and other FX too.

Link to music I don't need to repost. (Reposting would use more space, and we don't want that)
Very good, but it might get a little distracting to gameplay from about halfway onwards. Good music in itself, though.

Doesn't really fit into tribal with some of the instruments, otherwise it's good (remembers me of Serious Sam music, and that's good).
