| I got the green light from Sciocont on this.
This challenge consists in thinking up and drawing a concept for a civilisation.
Every week, there will be a subject, you will have a week to come up with something to make the challenge going.
The aim of this is to bring up new ideas, concepts or even new questions about the project that haven't been answered.
If this starts to slow down progress, then this topic will have to be blocked.
So let's begin.
The first subject would be to come up with your idea of a sentient species. It could be stuck on it's home planet/moon/world/whatever or it could be a free roamer of space. The only restrictions would be that it respects the project's concepts and that it could be done in the OE as we know it.
Jumps to your pencils! | |

| For the moment yes, we dont know how many submissions we'll get. If there will be too many then we'll move it to separate thread.
For the sake of not spamming topics without need.

| Here is as far as ive gotten so far, mostly to get peoples criticism so far, so I can improve and expand. - Spoiler:
Species : 7089 (Couldn't think of a name) Status: Declining
Physical Form/Properties : Humanoid life form, approx 2.75 meters tall, a meter wide is the standard in this species. Muscle makes up the majority of this creatures body mass, with a small brain. A interesting characteristic of this race is the armoured "plates" or "Saq 'jan" as they call it, that decorate the front chest of the members of this species, protecting their organs from damage in the races ritualistic combat. These "Saq 'jan" are a plain bony white yellow, but are commonly decorated to be ornate, either painting or engraving, much similar to the ways Humans might style their hair, but to a religious scale. These plates are thick, protecting the creature from frontal assaults, but they are only on the level of a knights medieval plate mail, but this seems to be enough protection for them. The armour however, is heavy, aswell as inflexible, pointing to this races past as heavily armoured carnivores, particularly of the ambush variety.
A complex respiratory and circulatory system is present, hidden behind the heavily armoured torso. This system is more complex, their hearts contain a additional 2 chambers, aswell as the heart being more powerful. Their muscle system is very different, far more complex. It appears from the corpses we have discovered, that the muscular system runs on some form of organic equivalent to a hydraulic press.
This means the muscles are very powerful, especially in the bite. Further hidden inside the creature is a mysterious organ, that contains a large ammount of a liquid substance. At first we thought this was some form of bladder or storage of some sort, but in reality, it is a liquid storage for the hydraulic style system. DNA tests indicate a similar 2 base-pair system, but its hard to find intact strands of DNA. Expectable, their reproduction system follows the equivalent of a quality over quantity system, with the females of this race only able to have offspring a maximum of 6 times. Carrying time is 12 months. The growing child is stored behind the "Saq 'jan", and expands into a large space inside the cavity. Digestion is similar to ours, except with a distinctly larger stomach, presumably to break down the hard shells of various life forms on their world. Their senses are similar to ours, but their eyesight is less developed then ours, more complex then that of a canine, but less then that of a human. Suffice to say, they can see SOME colour, but not much. Hearing runs on a similar system to ours, except they lack earlobes, simply because it would give away their camoflauged position, especially when their "tactic" is to hide in the dirt, half buried underground untill something comes along. Smell however, is a different story all together. Their sense of smell is far superior to our own. The metallic hull of our ship entering the atmosphere was "smelled" by them, and we had to keep falling back until we had finished our observation. Our scouts however, was easily able to remain hidden by smearing themselves in dirt, but we lost a couple of men doing this.
Cultural Type : Highly Aggressive/Traitorous zealots.
History : Most history of this race is unknown, but it is clear they managed to achieve orbital technology, but only equivalent to mankind in the early 21st century. Our turrets made short work of the debris field on our way down. However, a large cataclysm occured in their society, that appears to have reduced their numbers from 3 to 4 billion, to a small half a billion. Derelict cities litter the landscape, aswell as what appears to be radioactive winds blowing accross the worlds plains. These plains appear to have been a super power in this world. Numerous interconnected bunkers link the remains of them together, but there is a stagnation from lack of resources, leading to escallation in inter "Skan" warfare.
More coming soon, that was just 10 to 20 minutes work. MOD: Spoilertag your longposts.

| Mine - I'm shooting at the anti-civ we discussed earlier, but as of yet there's only a few elements. Suspension of Disbelief: Elephants communicate subsonically by making ground vibrations - it carries for a few km. - Spoiler:
Species name: O’konu Planet:QAB178 Physical Characteristics: Quadriped, ranging 1.6 – 2.4 meters tall, status undetermined E’hminimi: long, segmented prehensile tactile organs, similar to antennae. Especially flexible and sensitive in the “facial” region, which contains most of the other localized sensory organs, including vestigial eardrums nestled in the intermaxillar region of the lower jaw. The function of these eardrums is now nearly entirely taken over by the E’hminimi. The presence of these eardrums, when added to their presence in other pre-sentient species which lack E’hminimi, lead our researchers to theorize that the development of E’hminimi is a recent evolutionary change as more emphasis was placed on tactile, vibratory, and thermal senses, and vision was needed less and less. Clusters of E’hminimi protrude from the joining of all four limbs to the torso, the spinal cord, and scattered down the flanks. Other organs include a highly advanced olfactory receptor, mildly developed thermal senses, both lining the lower maxilla, the subclavian area, and the tops of their feet. They also have long strips of fatty tissue, containing bubbles of oily fluid, lining their spine and flanks beneath their E’hminimi. It is theorized that these bubbles work in tandem with their E’hmimimi, amplifying vibrations. Their metabolism is quite slow, though they are warm-blooded and have a closed circulatory system. This may, in part, be due to the fact that they appear able to digest nearly anything that can be found on their planet, and to safely remove toxins such as heavy metals and excrete them. However, their lungs have an interesting structure: two vermiform nodes on the trachea, which contain a form of bacteria which, when exposed to volcanic debris, remove and metabolize most of the silicone-based particles. As the O’konu prefer to live close to the active volcanoes which emit ash, rather than those prone to lava eruptions, this prevents vascular damage during eruption cycles, when they often retreat underground en-masse to hibernate, relying on stored fats and their own vibratory senses, which seem to allow them to tell when the eruption is over. History: Largely unknown. The complicated knotted items which they commonly carry, once thought to be decorative, are now thought to be a form of recordkeeping. The tools that they use are simple, yet they are made with great precision. It is known that volcanic activity has increased on their planet in the past three thousand years: it is not known at which point the species became sentient. Culture: Family units, ranging from two or three individuals to tribes of extended families, depending on the resources present in the area, appear to be entirely autonomous, gathering only when eruptions drive them underground. Despite this, there appears to be very little inter or intra-group conflict, or at least very little violent conflict. This, and the surprising unity of artifacts which they use, leads our researchers to speculate that they have some form of sub- or ultra-sonic communication which allows them to pass information between groups separated by a few miles. If this is the case, than autonomous family units may not, in fact, be alone.
I could go on, but yeah. Less textwall.

| These are good. Although, caedemon, yours is a bit earth centered to my taste, but I like it. Here's my concept (I lost my usb key so I can't get the drawing of my phone >_<) - Spoiler:
Name : Shellers (haven't found a good enough name)
This organism is a tall quadripedal invertabrate that that ranges from 2m to 2,70m tall and 2,50m to 3m long. It lives on a 4G planet (I concider Earth as a 3G planet) that orbits a gas giant. It's sun is a faint white dwarf. It has long legs and a long neck that can fit into it's rock hard thick shell (hence the name sheller). It has a shell on it's body, head, feet and on the tip of it's stalky eyes. Having a star that doesn't emit much light, it has three eyes on the end of these stalks, all made of a cristal like material (inspired by the trilobite for the eyes). It can see with both heat and light vision, witch gives it a advantagious combination. It has two mouths on the side of it's head at the bottom of it's head shell, in each mouth it has two leaf like tongues wich can scoop up it's food. But being jawless, it can only eat mashy and small food. It has two stomachs, a first one directly joined to it's mouths and a second one further down it's neck. It needs two stomachs to digest properly it's food. They are, by the way, omnivorous but more carnivore than herbivore. It has a small single sac in it's head that it uses as a lung. If that lung was any bigger, it's body would be oxydated due to the high oxygen percentage on there planet. They have a quite voluminous brain in the center of there body. It's shape ressembles like a thick manta ray. At the bottom of it's neck it has a longue tongue like arm. At the end of that arm is no hands, just a claw that they use to jab something to pick it up. But they now use that arm in a similar way that an octopus uses it's tentacles. This organism is hermaphrotide, having both male and female caracteristics. It lays about 20 eggs at a time, wich gives it a high population growth. Luckily, only one or two make it to adult hood. Culture : They have an advanced civilization. They have colonised the second moon of there gas giant and use a distant planet in their solar system for it's mineral ressources. They have a strange writting : they use some sort of spiral, it is similar tor earth's morse language but much more complicated. You read it from inside going out. You can find these artistics scripts on walls, plates and spheres. It is obvious that these plates and spheres are used as books. They are a peacefull race but they stay very territorial to unkown civilizations or untrustworthy civilizations.

I was aiming for this, as if a science vessel discovered their now radioactive home world. Quoting your concept: "Humanoid life form" - and this is only the beggining. The report itself is okay, but the species themselves are too Earth-like.

| I'm going to be putting mine up soon. I've done a few sketches of them in some chem notes, and i really like them. Here's an overview.
Vouaak
Vouaak are crustacean-like arthropods that live on a planet about .86 thimes the mass of earth, orbiting close around a reddwarf star. The average temperature there is about 60 degrees centigrade, and the planet is tilted just 7.6 degrees on its axis. The vouaak's planet, Mag, has three moons, one of them is quite large and close to the planet, while another is more like earth's moon. The final moon is small and twice as far away as the second. The first moon does harbor life, however, the Vouaak do not know how advanced it is, or that it is even there, as they have yet to build large civilizations. The large moon creates gargantuan tides over the planet Mag, and bows the ground itself towards it slightly- only mountains are never smothered by the tide's waves. This results in a very unique ecosystem on many parts of Vouaak- Tidal Forests. Tidal forests are a mix of land-based and water-based organisms. Seaweed carpets the ground when dry, and giand corals fight for space above the ground with hearty mangrove-like trees. These forests are more biodiverse than the fullest rainforests on earth, and carpet about 1/5 of the planet's surface, while harboring 40 percent of its life.

Again, that was intentional. I did it to make a alien that seems...Less alien. That was a bad example.
