PostSubject: Re: Biome List   Biome List - Page 8 EmptyTue Aug 09, 2011 11:22 am

All right, people, wake up and smell the coffee because biomes are back!

Pyrotin - way to go, rookie! Will be adding your alien biome to the consideration for high atmospheric density concept planets.
Tenebrarum - gottem. I needed some definition on that one...

Scio: freshwater system... I'll deal with it later. It's condition is Geothermic Resource availability.

Oh, yeah, and before I forget, our tree line is set at 3,000 m (unless there is a change to the equation, such as increased temperature, no trees can grow higher than that altitude) and our ice line is 5,000 m (higher than which we have no plants. Maybe lichens.

PostSubject: Re: Biome List   Biome List - Page 8 EmptyTue Aug 09, 2011 1:22 pm

Tree line... that reminds me!
Alpine Tundra
Occurs: Above the tree line on mountains.
Resources: Snow, thin air.
Elevation: Between 3000 and 5000 meters above sea level.
Climate: Dependant on area. Always cold, and is semiarid.
Topography: Mountainous, as in on a mountain.
Biodiversity: 1-2
Autotroph Niches:Tiny to small.
Heterotroph Niches:Tiny to small.
Other: Transient organisms would probably exceed the size limitations normally, as they have acess to outside nutrition.

Yay, more biomes. This one didn't take so long, so enjoy!

Gottem. Due to maths for assigning these suckers, I'm not distinguishing between alpine and arctic tundra - the plants are very similar in any case - and it's a sucession 1. Good job, Pyrotin.

Ok then.
Temperate Forest.
Occurs: Between tropical and alpine lines, with enough precipitation.
Resources: Good soil, fresh water,
Elevation: Between 50- 2500m above sea level.
Climate: Is warm and moist during hot months, but cold and frozen in the cooler months. Is midclimate/wet
Topography: Usually between flatish with some hills, to outright hillish.
Biodiversity: 3
Autotroph Niches: All up to Gargantuan (Very rarely).
Heterotroph Niches: All up to midsize.
Other:Goes through a drastic temperature change over the year, and many organisms will be driven out because of it.
Alright. Correct me if i'm wrong, anyone.
Thank You!
Edit: Please help with this biome, it is not very well put together. On another note...

When will the main list be updated?

Biome List - Page 8 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Biome List   Biome List - Page 8 EmptySun Aug 21, 2011 12:45 am

Double Post!
Sorry about this, but no-one was posting, so my hand is forced.
I propose a seperate caste for wetlands! This includes, the

Bog
Occurs: In areas of poor soil, and large amounts of precipitation.
Resources: Rather acidic water, peat deposits, sunlight, large amounts of rain.
Elevation: Between -100 and 2000m. It is not really dependant on elevation.
Climate: Is Wet. Temperature depends on region.
Topography: Mostly flat terrain, with maybe mohills here and there.
Biodiversity: 2
Autotroph Niches: Tiny to low Midlarge.
Heterotroph Niches: Tiny to low midsize.
Other: Almost all water comes from the rain.

Marsh(Freshwater)
Occurs: Any [grassy] area with shallow water.
Resources: Fresh water, sunlight
Elevation: Dependant on area. Usually low to the ground.
Climate: Is wet, and half sunken. Usually warm.
Topography: Mostly flat, at most mohills.
Biodiversity: 2/3.
Autotroph Niches: Tiny to Midlarge.
Heterotroph Niches: Tiny to midsize.
Other: The shallow water is a great place for small aquatic organisms.
Can maybe spring up inside of other biomes as a result of a drying river, or something.
This is a bit too general, may need to break it up.

Flooded Forest (May be a Freshwater Biome)
Occurs: In wet forests, due to a flood; may or may not be yearlong.
Resources: Large amounts of water, dependant.
Elevation: Depends on area.
Climate: Is Wet and temperature is dependant on where the forest is.
Topography: Usually flat, with some heavy amounts of water.
Biodiversity: 3
Autotroph Niches: Tiny to Midlarge/LOW large.
Heterotroph Niches: Tiny to Midsize.
Other: Many aquatic niches here, and the level of water is dependant.

Alright, now after that wall of text, there is one last thing i must say...

We should probably update the Biome list.
Thanks guys.

By the way, do you think I should split up the marsh and bog biomes into more specific and numerous versions? It would be fine with me. They seemed far too generalized, but I didn't have any time to fix them.
Thank you.

Freshwater (and brackish water) systems are microbiomes and so I don't need a heck of a lot of variation in them. Muchas Gracias, Pyrotin.
I'm currently poking the Arid group with a stick. Only a little more to go! (Well, in that precipitation range, anyway.)

While we can assume that most biomes can be shared across gravities, the addition of kite-forests and the like for low-grav worlds got me wondering if there'd be anything we should make/watch out for that'd be high grav specific?

High grav planets will have lower elevation ranges, meaning lower temperature difference from sea level to the highest mountain.

Biome List - Page 8 Empty
PostSubject: Deep sea Vent   Biome List - Page 8 EmptyThu Aug 25, 2011 8:16 pm

Deep Sea Vent
occurs: deep ocean near divergent plate boundaries/geothermal hot spots
resources: raw metals in solution, sulfur
elevation: 1001- m below sea level
climate: vents produce water @ 60 °C to 470 °C, ambient water away from vents (in deep sea) can be as low as 2°C
topography: any, vents create high spires or cones of precipitated minerals
biodiversity: 1
autotroph niches: none
heterotroph niches: tiny to midsize (only in very large vent systems) detritivores and carnivores
other: high pressure at very deep spots life may have originated here on Earth.

Shallow VentA
occurs: shallow ocean
resources: raw metals in solution, sulfur, toxic gases
elevation:1 to 100 m below sea level
climate: vents produce water @ 60 °C to 470 °C, ambient water away from vents (in deep sea) can be as low as 2°C
topography: any, vents create high spires, cones, or lattices of precipitated minerals
biodiversity: 2
autotroph niches: chemosynthetic or photosynthetic, not larger than small
heterotroph niches: tiny to midsize detritivores, herbivores and carnivores
other: these are like deep sea vents, but happen just below the surface- this results in an extreme environment like deep vents, but with enough light to spawn an autotrophic community. Animals and plants in these environments must have very high tolerance to many toxic and or damaging substances.

Sandy Shallows
Occurs: In offshore locations where the water is above freezing, the surface is easily reachable (By human standards), usually off beaches.
Resources: Sand, sunlight, seawater.
Elevation: 0 to -50m undersea.
Climate: Goes from relatively cold, to warm waters. Precipitation is negligible.
Topography: Flat, and sandy. Some [plants], some rocks.
Biodiversity: 2
Autotroph Niches: Tiny to midsize
Heterotroph Niches: Tiny to midsize (Though not often)
Other: Larger organisms can wind up here, and the biome interacts with amphibious organisms often.
Occurs in many places, may need to chop it up a bit..
Thank you :cyclops:.

That seems perfect for an ocean floor biome.

Note: now, all biomes that do not occur on earth are marked with A

Biome List - Page 8 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Biome List   Biome List - Page 8 EmptySat Sep 17, 2011 10:02 pm

Hey everybody. I'm back, and before anything else I have noticed that there are almost no actual freshwater biomes. Here's one, there might be more coming later.

Pond
Occurs: Where there is sufficient depression in the ground for rainwater to have an accumulative effect, or where a stream of water would create one.
Resources: Water, sunlight, soil, muddy soil.
Elevation: Depends on region, though generally above sea level.
Climate: Depends on region.
Topography: Depends, but is generally a gentle slope towards the center, and is usually circular in shape.
Biodiversity: 2/3.
Autotroph Niches: Tiny to small.
Heterotroph Niches: Tiny to small.
Other: Can freeze over during the winter, but this too depends on the region.
This biome will only pop up inside, and complement, others.

Warning, can and will flood.I wonder how flooding will work anyway?
Thank you

Water systems.

Someone want to add a "water retention" feature? We can't have these popping up in the wrong soil, like, say, sand.

PostSubject: Re: Biome List   Biome List - Page 8 EmptySat Oct 01, 2011 4:34 pm

A new one!

Lake
Occurs: Where there is a pond that has outgrown the size, where a river feeds into a depression, where there was extreme flooding; which stays in the spot, same conditions as pond but bigger.
Resources: Water, sunlight near the top, muddy soil, beaches and water cliffs on edge.
Elevation: Depends.
Climate: Depends, though if it freezes in the winter there is much more room that is unfrozen.
Topography: Generally a small even slope leading to the middle, with some drop-offs.
Biodiversity: 3
Autotroph Niches: Small to midlarge.
Heterotroph Niches: Small to Midsize/midlarge (depending on size of lake).
Other: Will pop up in other biomes, and can be around medium size to quite large. Should I make another biome for the Great Lakes?
There is another one down. Off to about 6 hours of homework! And some procrastinating.
