Yeah I heard something like that... That Mitochondria were an entire organism and when they were absorbed by a larger Microbe the DNA/RNA in them became part of the cells DNA and thus they divided with the cell... I might be wrong though.

The actual process is endocytosis.

You can gain things like chloroplasts and mitochondrion through endosymbiosis WHILE YOU ARE UNICELLULAR.
