PostUpdated Research Web

Okay guys, here is my first Devblog to fulfill my responsibility as Strategy Team lead.

Finally I have procured some work to show for my efforts in conceptualizing the Strategy Mode. The Research Web is a pivotal component of post-sapience gameplay, as it is what drives your species forwards from the Awakening stage to their final steps into Ascension. Through a graphing program, I have managed to lay out the relationships of all the researches until the early Space Stage. The reason I haven't put a screenshot of it here is because it is too big and has too much detail, and would take about 50 screenshots to display, so its easier just for you to download it to see it.

Updated Research Web

There are some researches lacking on the upper branch of the web. There are also some Researches that are disconnected from the web. These are areas that are still undergoing development, and any suggestions are welcome on this thread. Be sure to have yEd installed if you wish to view the Research web. A quick Google search should find it for you.

Here's a quick rundown of what this Research Web holds.

Researches - These are akin to "Technologies" from other games. They can be discovered as a result of reaching the required threshold of Research Points. Research Points are in turn generated through unit and player actions, buildings, agreements with other nations, etc.

Inventions - These are best thought of as "sub-researches". Whenever a Research is discovered, all the Inventions connected to it (Inventions are represented in the web by the smaller boxes below the bigger boxes) are unlocked and become available for discovery. Officially, Inventions are not required to discover further Researches. However, there are Inventions that do provide or enable actions or conditions that in turn are what discover later Researches. An example of this is with Fire, which is an Invention, being necessary for some later Researches.

Research Points can at first only be generated through actions. This is during the tribal stages of your nation. As your nation develops, and you discover Record Keeping, can can invest extra Research Points into fields of research, which are colour coded on the web, and the points will randomly proliferate to all unlocked Researches in that field. Scientific Method, when discovered, will allow you to invest your points in one specific Research. Investing points into a specific Research after it has been discovered will put the points towards discovering that Research's Inventions.

The different fields of Research are:

Spoiler:

Hopefully this web will help you better understand what Researches and Inventions are going to be in the game in the first place, and furthermore how they are related to one another.

No military research?

You mean the field? No. There wasn't enough of them to comprise their own field. They also weren't unique enough to comprise their own field. Plus, many fields of technology fall under military use.

Really? There weren't enough military technologies to give them their own category? Surprising. There are so many important military innovations that don't apply to the given categories.

You would think so until you actually work with it, and then you realize that they are all already covered by what there is. Are there any new ones you want to suggest?

Well, in order to give ideas, I would need to know what the various technologies are. But for one thing I was thinking of was rifling. This was a major advancement in weaponry and does not seem to apply to any of the given categories.

Which is exactly what this thread is for. In case you missed it, there is a download link to the current Research Web in the OP. Rifling is already there, under firearms.

I'm Back!, yay! :bounce:
i was thinking, would it be possible to implement a sorta research web like thing for microbe stage?
(if this has been discussed before, could someone send me a link to that thread?)

This is not the place to discuss that, and cells don't make technological advancements so we can't do that. The closest there will be to such a web of advancement will be with levelling up your organelles, but that will all be linear.

I love how you put everything that a civilization could be out there, i enjoy open minded games and this will definitely be a great learning tool for kids as well. If i had a hat, I would tip it to you, but I will just leave my next mouse on your flip flops as a way of saying "I love you human"

I presume some branches will be open earlier than others? I.E. science isn't really important when you're a tribe, but something like gathering can be.

Branches being open before others? Have you downloaded the Research Web? They are all part of one branch. They are just colour coded into categories, something which helps handle RP distribution from certain buildings.

hey i think it would be cool if u could take control of one of your guys in civ stage and fight or explore with him kinda like an FPS mode! maby allowing players to run there race in fps mode through interaction with other members of there race. In combat 2 alien races ship to ship boarding party fights in fps mode would be cool!!!

keep up the good work u guys rock!!
