I'm against tool combining. As I already stated doodle god is fun up to a point when most combinations don't work. Then you just kick the bucket and start combining everything with everything to get the few last tools.

I think we should divide tools in large related "clusters" which would be unlocked through god machines (eg, planet sculptor god-machine would unlock alll geology related tools) before ascension and unlocked them all after it.

Me too, that seems to be the idea now, this is from way back in October, and stuff changes pretty fast around here... Glad too see other like the God Machines idea too, though. But ascension must be much harder to achieve to make them worthwhile, and that makes ascension a greater achievement, as it should be, getting free tools, and no longer needing the machines, and getting an unlimited observer mode, so it all work out good.

And, in the theme of this thread, should tools only be combinable after ascension? Or could you link up machines before ascension, too?

As I said combination mechanics suck, they get boring and old quick. Not to mention for the tools that aren't on your quickbar you'll have to keep going and recombining them. Progressive unlock? Yes lets do it just like monte cristo limited the available buildings in cities XL according to your population. And it did not play good. Unless the interface we did was crappy or the end user a moron, it shouldn't be overwhelming.

Plus if we did the idea of the god tools unlocking clusters of related god tools one at a time as they got built, you'd have a progressive unlocking.
